Hanging out in DUMBO feels like hanging out in TriBeCa did in the late 80s: a mojo hanging out experience.

Jersey Shore Diorama
This little gem is just off the waiting room for New Jersey Transit trains at Penn Station. I never would have discovered if I hadn’t had to meet my parents in Newark last week to pick up Fyyffer, my car. Usually, I would drive to the Jersey Shore which — until the eponymous TV show came out — I liked a lot better than the Hamptons. Now I have to get out my rubbing stones and reevaluate.
Cape Henry When Empty
Driftwood Roots of Cape Henry
I went to Cape Henry near Virginia Beach last week for a small family reunion of aunts and uncles and cousins on my mom’s side of the family. (My last post on sleeping at the airport was a fitting postscript to the drive down there. It’s a mistake to drive through Virginia on I-95 if you’re going to be there anywhere near rush hour.) There was nothing better to do one afternoon except stroll on the beach and shoot driftwood. I like driftwood because it’s one of the most common examples of beautiful decomposition. Another gallery of nondriftwood from this trip will posted soon.
A Tourist in My Own Town
I had jury duty this week and they let me out early on Thursday so I walked around downtown and took pictures like a bloody tourist. I even rode the Staten Island Ferry. While I didn’t take any shots of the WTC construction site (except for the view from St. Paul’s graveyard), I went to the 9/11 Memorial Preview storefront. They were playing a video of 9/11 witnesses and rescue workers and they kept talking about what a nice day it was. I had to get out of there.
Looking Up in the 96th St. Subway
Of course, eventually it will all (not) look like Washington D.C.’s subway with all the renovation going on.
East River Says Hello
Feeling Better
It’s nice to be over it more or less especially since I never meant to turn this blog into a mere status report (see Twitter). A couple things: The Wall Street Journal is actually making good sense. All of the endless posturing, fear-mongering, and overspending on the War on Terrorâ„¢ has got to stop if we’re going to make any progress at all in the 21st Century.
On Haiti, you probably already know how you can text “HAITI” to 90999 so AT&T will donate $10 to the Red Cross for you. Please also consider texting “YELE” to 501501 which donates $5 to Wyclef Jean’s nonprofit organization specifically benefitting Haiti. Thanks.
Vertical Triptych – The Hamilton Fish Bridge
A very nice bridge. Along with train stations, bridges are among the best sort of public construction. Highways are too ubiquitous. Airports have been ruined by x-rays and TV sets.
Park Space of Bergen, NJ
When I had my car fixed in Bergen recently, I took a stroll and found some parks.
If you ever get sick of the grass, just put some cement in there.
Place benches next to nice neighbor’s sign.
Place benches in inviting formations to foster public debate and near sign discouraging public debate when the sun goes down.
