Ghosts Around the City

One of my New Year’s resolutions is to take more photos and stop pretending every image is so damn precious. I will still edit the utter crap. Here’s a gallery of recent black and white stuff. My other resolution is to make money.

Blogging while packing up from DJing and finding primitive photos in the laptop!

Hey platoons of fans! I will be DJing New Year’s Eve at SiP Lounge. 989 Amsterdam at 110, NYC. It will be funner than my blog. Miles apart.

Chapelism

Oh, the irony: spent Christmas with a bunch of Jews.

Christmas Eve Part Deux

Snow in riverside park, night

Thank you for putting up with my evolving art project which might be termed photographical lonerism. A blog is great because you can click on last year and see I was the pretty much the same despite my resolutions for 2009. Here’s wishing for peace on earth, health, wealth, family harmony, and in the case of the unemployed, gainful employment.

SiP Christmas Party

Sip Lounge christmas party

The SiP Lounge Christmas party was Saturday night during the blizzard. Snowstorm? (This is where I DJ most Thursdays.) The following happened during the party:

  • An indoor snowball fight — short, but sweet.
  • A guy took off all his clothes and did a back flip in the middle of Amsterdam Avenue. I didn’t see it but I saw the video which will apparently never be posted online even though you know if it got posted, it would go viral.
  • One of the waitresses passed out plastic barrettes and hair clips from the 99¢ store and guys wore them too. Exciting!

Snow Pictures

Here’s a gallery of some photos I took following the blizzard of December 19th. I activated NextGen gallery for Wordpress and will be using it for large collections of photos. The PicLens feature works as a slideshow but it’s currently displaying images at a larger size than what was uploaded. I’ll figure it out. Enjoy!

Train Kept A Rollin’

train passing under 121st street

A lot more snow fell on the city than expected. I expect I will have snow pix eventually but my camera fails in sub temperatures. Bleh.

Crack Door

cracked door

I got sucker-punched on 106th Street some years back. Nothing major until now. Random violence in your neighborhood makes you wonder who your friends are. This is the sort of thing that makes wingnuts such assholes. They would just say I’m a hippie living in an urban hellhole.

16 Bean Soup

16 beans after soaking

I’ve become a big fan of 16 Bean Soup. This shows the beans after soaking. It looks less appealing after it’s cooked because the small legumes mostly dissolve and make a baby food colored broth but this illustrates what drew me to pick up the ready-mixed bean bag at the grocery store. Technically, there are fewer varieties of beans in the mix because there are different sizes of common beans and barley is included which is a grain. My recipe uses the common soup support ingredients: garlic, onion, celery, carrots, salt, chilis, and pepper; but I also add a melange of Indian spices: cardamom, clove, cumin, coriander, ginger, cinnamon, mustard — and you can add turmeric if you want to yellow-fy the color. The turmeric taste got lost the one time I used it with all the other stuff I added. I hardly ever measure anything anymore so I can’t really give you my exact recipe. (There’s a decent recipe on the bag.) Anyway, you can still taste the beans and this soup gave me a newfound appreciation for large lima beans. I made lima bean hummus from scratch after making this.

Sidebar: One of my sidebar links and internet acquaintances made the front page of the New York Times Fashion & Stlye section today! As you probably know, I’m mostly vegan but the meat use by Georgia and Alie here makes it all the more hilarious.

Gazebo, Zamboni, Merovingian. These are a few of my favorite words.

The One-Legged Cat

one-legged cat from The Brothers Bloom

Sometimes I’m really dumb but I didn’t get this joke at first. It’s the punchline following Stephen’s declaration that they’ve hit a “one-hat town.” When I first saw it, I thought, “… but it’s a kitten! Poor kitty!” and then I thought “This is going to be an irreverent film,” and then I got the joke. From The Brothers Bloom which I thoroughly enjoyed. (4 stars)

I also saw this film and then I noticed there was no wikipedia entry for it so I wrote one — My contribution since I can’t afford to donate a lot. If you use wikipedia, please donate!
